    Stolichen Elektrotransport, the company responsible for electric public transport in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, currently has 314 trams, 134 trolleybuses and 49 electric buses. The total number of employees is 1850, of which 737 are drivers.

    There are 174 trams in operation in Sofia, with a further 89 in reserve in depots. According to statistics, 190 trams are more than 24 years old, 17 are between 18 and 24 years old, 18 are between 12 and 18 years old, 25 are between 6 and 12 years old and only 42 are less than 6 years old. The latter are of Polish production of the PESA Swing brand.

    There are currently 91 trolleybuses in operation. A further 32 are in reserve. Alone 16 coaches are more than 24 years old, 30 coaches are between 12 and 18 years old, 50 coaches are between 6 and 12 years old and 34 coaches are less than 6 years old. Most of them belong to the Skoda Solaris brand, the oldest 16 are Hungarian Ikarus.

    There are 54 electric buses in operation. Most of them belong to the Higer brand, but there are also 5 Karsan vehicles. The company intends to purchase new vehicles worth around 200 million euros, including: 15 short trolleybuses, 18 trams for a track gauge of 1435 mm, 25 articulated trams for a track gauge of 1009 mm, 30 electric buses with a length of 12 m and 15 of 18 m, as well as 20 articulated trams for a track gauge of 1435 mm

    In Sofia, only the trams on lines 20 and 22 have a track gauge of 1435 mm. All others have a track gauge of 1009 mm. The transport company is also planning to purchase 210 buses worth around 90 million euros. It is still unclear how the financing will be organized.

    The electrically operated public transport company in Sofia has three tram depots, two depots for trolleybuses, a central administration and maintenance department and a central warehouse. The value of the company’s property, plant and equipment as at 30 September 2023 was approximately EUR 185 million. Equity at this time was around 35 million euros. The company generated its largest revenue in the last five years in 2022 – around 60 million euros.
